Sonoma: Favorite Things

One of only two towns in Sonoma County built around a public square (the other farther north is Healdsburg), Sonoma exudes a sense of California history unlike any other North Bay town. To stroll among the Plaza's historic adobe and wooden structures -- some built before California became a state --  transports visitor and resident alike to a simpler time. The chic boutiques and eateries, however, are very of the moment and showcase Sonoma's bounty. Plus, you can dine al fresco almost any time of the year.

Food:
Tuesday Evening Farmer's Market on the Plaza (seasonal), Friday morning Farmer's Market a block north year 'round, Sonoma Market, Whole Foods, Artisan Bakers, Vella Cheese. For heirloom veggie starts -- Cornerstone Gardens. For teaching home cooks the gourmet way: Ramekins array of chef-led classes. For don't DIY: Elaine Bell Catering. Glen Ellen Village Market, the cheese, oil and other shops at Jack London Village.

Restaurant faves: Cafe le Haye, The Girl & the Fig, The Depot Hotel, The Red Grape, Mary's Pizza, Della Santina.
Glen Ellen's Garden Court and The Fig Cafe.

Walks: Around or through Sonoma Plaza. Stop to watch the ducks on the pond. Along the pedestrian path from Sebastiani Vineyards to Hwy 12 or into Jack
London Park, Glen Ellen.

Wine: For history -- Buena Vista and Sebastiani, B.R. Cohn for the mix of olive oil and wine, Viansa for the view and Italian style market  and Gloria Ferrer for the bubbly .

Events: The annual (winter) Olive Festival, Sonoma's multiple film and art festivals, May's Sonoma Jazz+ Festival,  4th of July parade and fireworks, Christmas at the Mission, annual Wine Auction.
